Leaking Clutch

Q. Hello, The clutch on my 1985 BMW 528E keeps losing fluid. I was told that the problem is with a part that sits behind the dash (or below the steering wheel). I can't find the name of this part - any suggestions?

Thank you,
Sheila

A. The hydraulic clutch has two main parts, the clutch master cylinder and the clutch slave cylinder. The clutch master is mounted on the engine side of the firewall and is connected to the clutch pedal. It sends fluid to the clutch slave cylinder which actually moves the clutch in and out. It is possible the clutch master is leaking out the back into the passenger side of the fire wall. All you need to do is look under the dash and follow the rod from the clutch pedal to the firewall. If you see fluid running down the inside of the firewall, the clutch master is leaking.

If you don't see this fluid trail then it is clutch slave cylinder. If you lift off the rubber boot on the slave cylinder and fluid pours out, then it's leaking and needs to be replaced.
