Ford Valve Lifters

Q. I have a Ford F-350 1996 460 cid. The lifter appears to be stuck. It started rattling a couple of days ago. I pulled the valve cover off and the one rocker arm has no tension on it. I can turn the motor over and watch the cam move the push rod. The rod and rocker have no obvious damage.

Can I pull the lifter up through the head with a magnet or do I have to pull the manifold? Any other quick fixes to try before removing the manifold would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

A. The only way to get those lifters out is to remove the intake manifold. Once the intake is out, you can use a magnetic lifter remover or lifter puller to get the lifters out. If lifters are stuck in their bores, it may be necessary to use a plier-type tool to remove them. Sorry, there are no quick fixes for this.
