Toyota Cressida Wagon Transmission Died
Q. I have an 1984 Toyota Cressida Wagon 4 door. Fuel injection, Automatic Transmission with a driving pattern selector switch which allows me to choose from Economy, Normal, or Power. I drive with it set on Normal and I also have an Overdrive button which the manual suggest that I drive with the Overdrive on so I do.
The other day I was driving on the highway going about 50 mph when suddenly I heard a winding noise and my car slowly came to a stop. The engine was still running and I could move it into all the gears but none of them would work there is just a winding noise when I start it. I had a friend look at it and he said it may be the driving pattern selector switch and someone else said it may be the epicyclic gears.
I cannot locate a driving pattern selector switch anywhere and I don't want to waste the money on a tow into a garage if it is going to be a lot to fix because lets face it, it is a 1984 with a lot of miles but if it is only going to be around $100.00 to fix it I would like to. So any help you could give me on what you think it is please let me know.
Thanks A LOT!!!!
KellyA. Has anyone checked the transmission fluid level Kelly? It sounds to me like it all leaked out. If the fluid level is good, then the next thing to do would be to replace the transmission fluid and filter. It is possible the filter is clogged and caused it to stop.
If that doesn't help then the problem is internal to the transmission. The mode selector switch will not cause the transmission to stop.
