Cold Engine Rattle

Q. I have a 1997 Nissan Pickup with 45,000 miles on it. When I start it up in the morning it the engine rattles for a couple of seconds then it stops and I do not hear it again. Do you know of any type of oil additive or something else that will fix this problem.

Thank You,
Tim

A. This is a common problem with this truck. What you are hearing is the timing chain rattling until the timing chain tensioner pumps up with oil and takes out the slack.

Since you are still within the Nissan powertrain warranty, I would take it back to the dealer and have it replaced. If I remember correctly, there is a new style tensioner that eliminates this noise.
