Bad Blazer EGR Valve?

Q. I just bought a 1995 Chevrolet Blazer 4 door 4x4. It has a 4.3 Vortec, fuel injected, automatic transmission with 81,000 miles and the letter W in the VIN number. When we start the Blazer in the morning it runs very rough, smells of rotten eggs and the check engine light will blink for about 30 seconds.

After the car idles three or four minutes it runs fine, smell goes away and it will start and run fine the rest of the day. The person I bought it from said he had the same problem at 50,000 miles and replaced the EGR valve and the problem went away. I had the car checked out by my mechanic and he found a code PO300 random misfire. He did find a vacuum leak and repaired it.

I guess my question is could a EGR valve be defective after 30,000 miles? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated before I sink to much money into this car.

Thank You,
Jeff

A. It is possible the EGR could go bad after 30,000 miles. But with a GM vehicle it could also be a problem with the ERG control system. GM uses a Linear EGR which has sensors that see how much the EGR valve is open and uses the PCM to control it. If any of these sensors or control solenoids are malfunctioning, it will throw the whole EGR system off.

There is a way to test the system without a scan tool, but it is a complicated procedure. The best thing to do is have it tested with a scan tool to find the problem. Maybe someday GM will go back to the simpler and more reliable way of controlling EGR function.
