SUV For The Disabled
Q. Hi Vincent, My name is Michael, I'm a 51 year old disabled vet with a serious driving problem and I need your help. I have driven for 31 years with hand controls with no real problem. However, the car companies have systemically eliminated all large two door cars with shifts on the column making my search for a new car from any car company impossible.
Most new cars have four doors, or the two car models have shifts on the floor with large, hard to get over consoles in the middle.
Most wheelchair drivers entry on the passenger side, slide across the driver's side and pull the wheelchair into the back seat. That's impossible with all new cars. My question:
I have noticed that some SUV's are set up okay for me but they are too high off the ground for my wheelchair transfer. Is there some way to lower a SUV's about 5 or 6 inches, either with a lowering kit or perhaps a hydraulic device that would lower for entry and the raise for driving? I know that some handicapped equipped mini vans will kneel, but I have not been able to find this kneeling tech for SUV's or cars. Any thoughts?
Thanks for your help!
MichaelA. Being a vet myself and spending my time in hell, I do sympathize with your problem. It is unfortunate that car makers seem to forget those who gave the most.
You can lower a SUV somewhat, but I don't think you can lower them enough to suit your needs. I also don't know if the kneeling systems can be adapted to a SUV. This is just something outside my experience. There are companies that specialize in modifying vehicles to suit the needs of the disabled and they would be better able to help you with this question.
I have been to the Disabled American Veterans web site and they have many resources that will be able to assist you with your needs and a trained staff that will be able to help you with your problem. Another good site is Mobility Systems that has links to companies that specialize in vans for the disabled.
I'm truly am sorry I couldn't be of more help to you.
