Park Avenue Accessory Problem

Q. I have a 1994 Buick Park Avenue Ultra. The motor is the 3800 V-6 supercharged. Fully loaded including CD stereo, power leather seat, and power moon roof. The mileage on the vehicle is 87,500.

The problem I'm having is that with these cars when you shut the engine down the courtesy lights come on and the radio stays on until a door is opened then the radio is to shut down and the lights stay on till the door is closed and the lights will be on for a period of about 30 seconds. Now back to my question; when I open the drivers door this feature does not work, the lights come on yet the radio doesn't shut down until another door is opened. What controls this and where might I find this relay or switch. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated as three so called certified GM mechanics could not figure this out.

I also have one more quick question: I have a slight clanking coming from the area of the tension pulley or the supercharger. How do I check which is at fault?

A. Let me first describe how this system is supposed to operate.

Retained Accessory Power (RAP) allows the radio, power windows and sunroof (if equipped), to operate for approximately 10 minutes after turning the ignition switch to OFF.

When the ignition switch is turned OFF, the RAC module senses this and turns on its RAP relay control output. This applies battery voltage, made available from the RAC module to the coil of RAP relay number 1, energizing the coil. With RAP relay number 1 energized, battery voltage from RH under hood fuse block fuse 2 is applied directly through the closed RAP relay number 1 contacts to power the radio. The radio operates for approximately 10 minutes or until any door is opened. If any door is opened, RAC module door open input is grounded, thereby turning OFF the output at terminal C1/H. This de-energizes RAP relay number 1, and removes power from the radio. The 10-minute time interval is reset by turning the ignition switch to RUN, then back to OFF.

RAP relay number 2 operation is similar to RAP relay number 1 operation with the exception of RAP relay number 2 also being energized any time the ignition switch is in RUN, BULB TEST or START. The RAC module's relay number 2 control supplies battery voltage to energize RAP relay number 2. This relay powers the power windows and sunroof (if equipped), for approximately 10 minutes after turning ignition switch to OFF, or until any door is opened.

If the system stays on with the first door open and shuts off with the second door opening, the first thing I would check is the door switch on the first door. It may be bad and not sending a signal to the Accessory Delay Module that the door is open. If the door switch is okay, then you probably have a bad RAP relay 1.

The RAC is located inside the right side of the dash board, next the RH dash vent.

As for the noise from the supercharger, it is most likely the idler pulley bearing. If you take a long screwdriver and put the tip on the pulley center bolt and your ear on the end of the handle, you can listen to the bearing and isolate the noise that way.
