Weird Taurus Headlight Problem

Q. I have a 1992 Ford Taurus 3.0. The headlights, after 40 minutes of driving go off for a few seconds, then come back on for a minute or so. then does it again. It seems to continue to keep doing it. One time I unplugged the alternator when the lights were going off and on, and they stayed on.

(Side note: to the best of my knowledge the head lights are the only thing affected.) I drove it ten more minutes they never went off again. then I shut it off and plugged the alternator back in. I took the alternator in to an alternator starter place and they said it was alright.

Thanks for your help,
Brad

A. The one thing about working on cars is that when you thought you've seen it all, something like this comes along to prove you were wrong.

It would seem to me that the diodes inside the alternator may be effecting the headlights somehow. The only way to confirm or deny this would be to replace the alternator, which would be my next step.
