Century Starts And Won't Start

Q. Hello Vincent, I've been working on my Dad's car and not having much luck. It's a 1985 Buick Century, 2.5 liter, Fuel injected Throttle Body, over 200,000 miles. The car seems to have fuel problems. It will run fine at times, but you never know when you turn off the motor if that's the time it won't start.

My Dad put some fuel in the Throttle Body and it started up,until the fuel ran out. You could see that there is no fuel coming from the injector. With the key turned on I took off the two wire connector on top of the injector and ran a + and - wire to the injector and fuel shot out. What would cause the injector to quit working?

Thank You,
Greg

A. There are two possibilities for this. The distributor or the fuel pump relay. When the ignition key is turned on, the ECM will energize the fuel pump relay. The fuel pump pressurizes the system to approximately 10 psi. If a distributor reference pulse is not received by the ECM within two seconds, the fuel pump relay will be de-energized, turning off the fuel pump. If a distributor reference pulse is later received by the ECM, the fuel pump relay will be re-energized and the pump will resume operation.

I would also check the computer to see if there are any stored codes that will aid in diagnosing this problem.
