Automotive Paint Protection
Q. Good afternoon Vincent. I have a question I am hoping you can help me with: My car is only one year old but after parking near a sprinkler system (reclaimed water at that) my finish looks terrible! I've tried a light polish compound and that doesn't seem to make a difference.
The soap I use to wash my car does claim to 'wax' the finish - so I am hoping that I can treat the car with some overall reside eliminator and then treat the mineral deposits from the reclaimed water and start over with a new wax job but I don't know what products to use or where to start. I also don't want to take any chances with my paint finish. Is this job best left for the professionals?? Thanks for your advice.
Best Regards,
HeatherA. At this point I would recommend that you have the car buffed and waxed by a professional automotive detailer. This is your best chance to get the finish back to looking new. Once it is back in shape, and under the conditions you experience, I would recommend running it through a good car wash once a week and give it a good waxing every six months with a quality Carnuba wax such as Turtle Wax.
It is very likely the reclaimed water will actually eat into the finish and destroy the paint so you need to put a barrier between that water and the finish. A good hand waxing is the only thing that will do that. Cleaners that contain waxes or a car wash wax is okay under normal conditions, but your conditions are not normal and it's going to take extra effort to protect your investment.
And, if possible, you should not park near this sprinkler, even if it means extra walking.
