Chevy Celebrity Fails Emissions Test

Q. Vincent, I have an 1986 Chevy Celebrity (2.8 V-6) with 137,000 miles. I just had it in for a New York State Inspection. It failed the emissions test. They put in a rebuilt carb and an O2 sensor but it still failed due to excessive CO emissions but I got a 1 year waiver.

I knew the carb was no good before the test so I didn't have a problem with the replacement parts. The car runs better but do you have any idea a what I would need to do to reduce the emissions to a passing level? The catalytic converter has never been replaced.

Thanks for your help,
Rich

A. I think before you go and replace the catalytic converter, I would make sure that there are no vacuum leaks and that the emission system is working properly. A fresh set of spark plugs, air and fuel filter will help a lot also. I would also want to make sure the carb is adjusted properly.

A high CO reading indicates a rich fuel mixture so a simple carb adjustment could very well take care of the problem.
