Gas In A Diesel

Q. Hi Vincent: A friend filled the fuel tank of his Dodge 3500 PU that has a Cummins diesel engine, with gasoline. He drove it about 100 miles when the engine failed. What damage would be expected from operation using gasoline. He pumped 27 gallons of gasoline into his fuel tank at the fill up.

Thanks,
Terry

A. Running a diesel with gasoline will destroy the engine. There's no question about that.

The difference between diesel fuel and gasoline is the flash point of the fuel. That is to say at what temperature the fuel ignites. Gasoline has a much lower flash point than diesel fuel. The premature burning of the fuel is what causes damage to the pistons and valves.

He can try draining out the fuel tank and filling it with diesel fuel. Maybe he got lucky and it will start and run. I'll keep my fingers crossed for him.
