Chevy ½-ton Wants Good Heads
Q. Dear sir: Thank you for your response on wiring a replacement steering column in my 1967 Chevy ½-ton. Checking the wires with a meter is a great idea, however I wanted to let you know that I was able to solve the problem much easier by purchasing a connector made by GM for the purpose of connecting tilt columns (which apparently is always supplied with the flat connector) to the curved type connector. Sorry, I do not have the part number, I purchased mine from another source.
I do have a second question to request pertaining to the same vehicle. The engine is a 327, but only 220 hp. I wish to increase the horse power, as I am having the engine rebuilt at the present time. I am thinking of purchasing a pair of the new vortex heads along with a new intake to install on the 327 engine. Will this, along with headers, increase my horse power to warrant the additional cost?
I have purchased a 700-R transmission, hoping that the over drive will help the gas consumption. I would appreciate any thoughts you might have on using the Vortec heads on my present engine. Thank you kindly for your help in the past
Sincerely,
LeightonA. I'm glad you were able to solve the steering column problem so easily. As soon as I read your letter I remembered that there was an adapter for that. I used to work at a shop that sold them. I guess this old brain of mine is getting feeble in my old age.
The Vortec heads really won't increase horse power all that much, but with a performance intake and headers, you might get an extra 10 - 15 hp. Is it worth it? I don't know, you have to decide if the expense of the parts is worth the extra power. Keep in mind also that you have to feed those extra horses. And they eat gas, so you may want to factor that in as well.
The OD transmission will help stretch out you milage, but only if you do a lot of freeway driving. For local or in-town driving it won't save enough to justify the extra cost.
