Transmission Leak

Q. Hi Vincent, I recently had a rebuilt transmission put in car. It is a 1985 Olds Cutlass, V-6 231 RWD. The transmission is a automatic, 200 metric. When I went to pick up car, it was still on the rack, and I noticed that a little fluid was leaking where the speedometer cable ties onto the transmission.

I pointed this out to them and they said it wasn't their fault. They said the speedometer cable housing was old, and that's why it was leaking. I have had other people tell me since then, that the speed cable has nothing to do with it. That either the speed gear or the "O" ring in the transmission is bad, and the transmission shop should have fixed this.

So if what I've been told is true, then the transmission shop lied to me. If that is true, then I won't go back, I'll eat the seven hundred bucks, do what I should have done in the first place, and fix it myself. I have been told, this type leak is easy to fix. I just wanted to know, what you thought about the whole deal? I do value your opinion.

Thanks,
JD

PS... Originally, reverse was out in the transmission, they did fix that.

A. Basically what you've heard is correct, a bad speedometer casing will not cause a leak. And fixing that minor leak would have been no big deal. Personally, it would be something I would fix along with the rebuild and either not charge for it or just charge a small amount for the new "O" ring.

I think that the $700.00 you spent for the repair is not wasted, after all, they did fix the original problem. But I think by not taking care of that small leak they showed little concern for doing a complete and thorough job and your complete satisfaction.
