Chevrolet Cavalier High And Low Idle Speed

Q. I have a 1994 Chevrolet Cavalier 3.1 liter V-6, automatic transmission and 145,000 miles. I bought the car about a week ago and I noticed at first it idled rough between 600 and 700 rpms.

Chevrolet Cavalier High And Low Idle Speed

It has stalled on me twice now, both times in drive, although putting it in PARK only gives it about 100 more rpms at idle. I added fuel injector cleaner and after that lost my speedometer, Check Engine Light came on, and the car either is at extremely high rpms both at idle and cruise, or extremely low like before.

Thank you for your time.

A. You may have a vacuum leak. You could try cleaning the throttle body and plate first. Then unplug the IAC motor and remove it to clean the pintle valve up. Re-install it and see how it idles then. We also need to scan it for codes to see what's going on there. The codes could very well be related to the idle problem.
