Electric Ride
Q. Hi Vincent, My name is Judy and the help I need is how to change from a gas motor to an electric motor that will run off of a rechargeable battery. I have an old riding lawn mower, and I want to make a scooter out of it so I can go places with my family.
I don't have the money to buy a scooter or electric wheelchair, so I thought I may be able to make this old lawn mower into a scooter. I need to know where to find a motor, what hp, and anything else that I need to do to make this into a scooter.
Thank you,
JudyA. I really would like to help you with this Judy, but there are so many things to consider in a project like this. You need to consider the weight of the vehicle, the load, tire sizes etc..
The main problem is not the motor, the problem is mating the motor to the existing transmission or drive wheels. You will need some kind of adapters to connect the shaft of the motor to the input of the transmission. Probably your best bet would be to get the specs of a wheel chair motor and see what would need to be done to adapt it to serve your purpose.
I suggest the wheelchair motor because they are high efficiency 12 volt motors that are specifically designed for what you want.
I'm sorry I can't help you any more than this, but a project like this is something that has to be just done and problems solved as you go along. There is nothing that will give you a step by step method of doing it.
