Lincoln Stalls Cold
Q. Hello, I have a 1995 Lincoln Town Car Signature Series with 21,600 miles on it. It has a 4.6 liter Fuel Injected V-8. When I start the car on a "cold" start is stumbles and acts like it is going to stall. I tried giving it gas while it does this but it does not help. After about 30 seconds the problem goes away, and does not return all day until the next "cold" start.
One day it did stall, and the battery light and oil light came on. I restarted the car right away, and it ran perfect and the battery light and the oil light did not return. I checked the amount of oil in the car, and it is right were it is supposed to be. I really don't have any idea what this could be. I was thinking of replacing the fuel filter, and maybe some new plugs and wires. Can you think of what maybe wrong with my car? A buddy of mine who knows a lot about Lincoln's suggested getting the PCM reconfigured/reprogrammed because it may be a glitch in the system. Any help or suggestions you can give me would be appreciated.
Thank You,
BradA. I'm a great believer in making sure the basics are good before I go looking for a more involved problem. You obviously do not drive the car much and you never had a tune up. I would suggest new plugs and ignition wires first. Then take the car on a nice long drive on the interstate. Let it run at 65 or 70 mph for a few miles. Then I think you'll see a distinct improvement in the cold start.
Cars that sit and just driven locally tend to build up carbon in the cylinders because they just don't get hot enough to burn it out. A good ride at speed once every couple of weeks will keep everything free and clear.
