Dexcool® In A Ford

Q. Hello Mr. Ciulla, I just read your advice about sticking with the conventional EG antifreeze in older engines, and I am concerned because I have already switched to Texaco Dexcool® in my 1987 Ford F-150, 4.9 liter engine.

I was replacing the thermostat and thought it would be a good time to switch. I did flush the system with water through the heater hoses, with the thermostat removed. I also read, on a link to your newsletter that Dexcool® may react with deposits existing in the system. I also have an aluminum radiator. Would you advise leaving the Dexcool® in the truck or would I be better to flush it out and go back to the traditional EG.

Thanks for your time and advice,
Mike

A. I would recommend going back to the regular EG antifreeze. Dexcool® has been linked to early head gasket failures in certain Ford engines. Since you have read my article Antifreeze: Red or Green? which explains the two types of antifreezes I need not go into too much more detail.

Suffice it to say the best thing to do is keep an EG system EG and a Dexcool® system Dexcool®.
