Another VW Using Oil!!

Q. Hi, I own a 2000 Jetta with 30,000 miles. During the first 20,000 miles the car burned approximately one quart of oil every 1000 miles. The dealer insisted that this was normal. After much complaining and an oil consumption test (and more complaining) they finally decided to help me after one of their mechanics commented that the exhaust pipe was black.

Through all of this I was insisting that they write everything down for my records. When I asked for this statement in writing, they then told me that I did need a new engine. They tried to pawn off a "remanufactured" engine but then did end up giving me a new engine. My new engine is burning oil. Not as much but this time a quart every 2000 miles.

I think this is completely unacceptable for a new car! They of course say this is normal. I'm getting really sick of this and if I was independently wealthy I would ditch this car! But of course I am not so I'm stuck with it. As a side note: my first engine produced a yellow slime on my oil cap (cracked engine block?) and they of course said this was "normal". VW of America (crooks) will not listen to me.

Do you have any suggestions? I've noticed this similar complaint of VW 2000 Jettas on the Internet, is this a prevalent problem? What do you think the problem is and is there anything I can do about this? I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Laurel

A. Laurel you did everything right and actually made out better than most Volkswagen owners. I don't know how many letters I get from VW owners complaining about this very problem.

For a new engine to use that much oil is not normal. For an properly maintained engine at 100,000 miles it's not normal. VW does not, officially, feel this is a problem although what they say behind closed doors is probably something else. To me, this is a major design flaw and it would be very expensive for VW to correct.

As to what recourse you have, your state probably has a lemon law of some kind in force. I would contact your states consumer advocate and find out exactly what it entails and you may even be able, in some states, get the full purchase price back from VW.
