A Shifty Ford

Q. We just purchased a 1988 Ford Taurus Station wagon with automatic transmission V6, A/C. When we are driving, it seems to jerk from 1st gear to second gear. It does not do it all the time but it is enough to concern us. what should we do? What should we be looking at to fix this problem?

A. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. Take it in and have the transmission fluid and filter changed. Quite often it is a partially clogged filter that is causing the problem. If the torque converter has a drain plug, make sure they drain that as well.
