High Revving Mustang

Q. I have a 1966 Ford Mustang with a C4 transmission in it. I am wondering if it is only a 3 speed or if it has an overdrive on it? Right now it sounds as though it is running at pretty high rpms when I am cruising at 50 mph. Additionally there are two drive settings on the floor mounted shifter. I was wondering if maybe it isn't' shifting into the overdrive gear? If you could help me out I would appreciate it.

Thank you,
Eric

A. 1966 Mustangs did not have an overdrive transmission. In fact, it sounds like you got the two speed model which was fairly common back then. What you can do is this, from a complete stop slowly accelerate to about 45 or 50 mph and count the shifts, If you feel two shifts, it's a three speed. if you only feel one, then you have a two speed. They were always high revving cars.

You can visit my friend Teri Olcott who is our Vintage Cars Guide here at About.com. She has some great info on that car as well as a whole section devoted to Mustangs. She can hook you up with people who know these cars inside and out.
