F-150 No O/D

Q. Hi Mr. Ciulla, I have a 1991 Ford F-150 V-6 4.9 liter with automatic transmission. I was driving it on the highway at about 75 MPH when all of a sudden it felt like someone slammed into me and then my engine revved really high like it was in neutral and then it jumped back into gear.

Once I stopped and put it into park I could not get the OD to work at all. When I attempt to start driving in OD it just sounds like it is in neutral and that I am revving the engine. Is there anything that I can do besides shoot it. I am a single mother and this is all I have right now and I am scared to find out what it may cost me to get it fixed, of course I am also afraid of what the mechanic will tell me is wrong with it when he sees a woman with truck problems.

Anything you can tell me to help me either fix it or not to be taken advantage of at the service station would be more than appreciated!

Thanks so much,
Jennifer

A. There was a TSB, number 291 issued on Jan 1995 regarding this problem. What happens is the OD clutch inside the transmission breaks. Ford has a new type clutch for replacement, but it does involve removing the transmission from the truck. This is not a cheap procedure and due to the age of the vehicle, I seriously doubt Ford will offer anything in the way of help.

I know this is not what you want to hear, but at least you'll have some idea of what you're up against.
