Changing Spark Plugs

Q. Hello. I was wondering how to replace the spark plugs in my pathfinder and truck. Here is the information on them.

1996 Nissan Pathfinder
1996 Toyota T-100
V-6 engines in both
Automatic Transmission
Fuel Injection
ABS brakes
P/S - A/C - Cruise control

If you could please send me some information on this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Dwight

A. There's no special trick to replacing the plugs, just a lot of work. I would make sure I have a variety of extensions and universals when you do it. Especially for number six plug on the Nissan.

Just unplug the spark plug wires and get your spark plug socket down in there. When I put in the new ones, I use a piece of 5/8" hose about a foot long. I stick the plug in one end and start the plug by hand. The one thing you don't want to do is cross thread the plug. I turn them in by hand as far as I can by hand and then use the ratchet to torque them down. They have to go at least three or four full turns before you put a socket on them.

If you look in the tool kit that came with the Pathfinder, you should find a couple of spark plug tools. The long one is for number six

Here are the specs. I highly recommend using NGK spark plugs in both vehicles.

Toyota:
NGK: BKR5EKB-11
Gap: 1.1 mm (0.043 in.)
Torque: 18 Nm (13 ft lb)

Nissan:
NGK: BKR5ES-11
Gap: 1.0-1.1 mm (0.039-0.043 in)
Torque: 20-29 Nm (14-22 ft-lb)
