Dodge Ram Knocking

Q. I hope you can help me. I have a 1998 Dodge Quad 1500 2W drive, 5.9 liter V8, auto trans with 65,000 miles. Recently I have noticed a really strange knock/rattle coming from the engine. The noise only occurs in park or neutral.

When my truck is accelerated to about 2000 rpm while in park or neutral, a loud knock/rattle can be heard. It seems like it is coming from the front of the engine, but it is hard to tell due to the acoustics of the compartment. If the rpm is less than 2000 or greater than about 2500 rpm, there is no noise. The noise is loudest when the engine is warm, when the engine is cold, the noise is very hard to hear. Any idea what could be causing this?

Tam

A. There are two TSBs that refer to the symptoms you describe they are 09-05-00 dated Feb. 25, 2000 and 18-05-00 Rev F dated Sept. 15, 2000. The first refers to a bad intake manifold plenum pan gasket. This is associated with higher than normal oil consumption. The other refers to a reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) with new software.

I would bring it in to Chrysler and let them determine which, or possibly both, of these is affecting your truck.
