Chevy Blazer EGR Valves

Q. Hi Vince. I've got a 1993 Chevy Blazer with the 4.3 liter Vortec V-6 with the automatic transmission. It's got about 132,000 miles and it's fuel injected.

Looking For Basic Automotive Instruction

My question is parts related. Recently I had a problem with the EGR valve in the Blazer. The idle was extremely rough, it would occasionally stall out, the SES light came on, and there was a strong smell of gas coming out of the exhaust.

I was told by my mechanic that a new EGR valve would cost in the neighborhood of $230.00. However, I didn't want to spend that much so I got a used EGR valve at a parts store for $50.00. My problem now is that I compared the two valves and they're different. The valve that's currently in my Blazer is ACDelco #214-5594, while the valve that I bought is ACDelco #214-5593.

I learned that the 5593 valve works in the 1994 Blazer, as well as the 5594 valve. Is there some reason why the valve that I bought wouldn't work in the 1993 Blazer?

Chris

A. If they look the same and bolt up, try the used one. I doubt you'll notice a difference if there is a slight calibration difference.

A bad EGR valve should not give you a fuel smell in the exhaust. Maybe you also have a bad fuel injector or fuel pressure regulator as well?
