Chevy Lumina Transmission Flush

Q. I have a 1997 Chevy Lumina with 175,000 miles on it, bought it at 80,000. I get the oil changed every 3,000. The last change the fellow said the transmission fluid was dark and should be changed. I haven't had it done in a very long time I read on your About site that a flush for high milage vehicles could cause more problems than it fixes.

Chevy Lumina Transmission Flush

Is a regular fluid change a problem? If not, what should I tell them specifically. I drive about 200 miles a day, almost all highway, to and from the office, a bit crazy but thats it.

Thank you,
Eli

A. A simple drop of the pan with a new filter, gasket and fluid should be okay. A "flush" could be a problem in MY opinion. This would involve removing a cooler line and tapping into it to run an external pumping machine that pumps fluid through the transmission. They claim that ALL fluid is replaced which is vertically impossible due to what's laying in the pan.

Others would say... "if it aint broke, don't fix it."

If it shifts okay now, it should be okay after dropping the pan, replacing the filter and refilling with the proper amount of Dexron transmission fluid.
