Chevy Cavalier Cooling Fan Stays On

Q. Hi Vincent, I'm hoping you can help me, I have a 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier, 2.2 liter and A/C. I've been experiencing a lot of problems with overheating and I am no mechanic so I don't really know where to start. I've taken it to the mechanics here and so far I've gone through three fans, changed the thermostat, all coolant levels are good and changed the relay.

Chevy Cavalier Cooling Fan Stays On

The fan works when I leave the shop and about two weeks later it stops. I have to tie wrap the plug into place because it seems to be loose and then the fan runs constantly. It never shuts off. It's about -5° where I live and when I start that car in the morning the fan is on.

Is it possible for the fans to burn out after running constantly like that? Or for that matter should it even be running constantly like that? This has been an ongoing and very costly thing. I know it's something to do with that fan, just can't figure out what. When the fan runs the car is good. Hope you can help.

A. If it's cold where you are the fans should not be running unless the A/C compressor is running. Sounds like you need to scan it to see what the ECM is doing. It may be bad and telling the fan to run all the time. Also make sure you don't have a blown head gasket causing the temperature to exceed the fan turn on temperature.
