Chevy Astro Van Stalling And Surging

Q. Good Afternoon, I have a 1992 Chevy Astro Van, V-6, automatic transmission. I'm not sure of much else about the van. My problem is intermittent stalling and surging idle. After I turn the Van on it runs fine. But after a minute or so it Idles high and low and stays that way. I thought I had a clogged fuel filter, so I replaced it. Still Happened.

Chevy Astro Van Stalling And Surging

Long story short. I have replaced fuel filter, air filter, plugs, wires, rotor, distributor cap and pushed a ton of fuel cleaner through the tank. I recently replaced my alternator and battery as well. The problem still exists.

Another problem it is having is, when I test drive it, It won't stall as long as there is gas getting to the engine, but when I floor the gas pedal, I get no pick up at all. Could this be a fuel pressure sensor, or a vacuum problem? I can't think of anything else.

A. If you floor it and the van won't accelerate, you may have a bad fuel pump or a clogged catalytic converter. This should be a throttle body injection system which has been a fairly trouble free system. They used to suck the TBI base plate gaskets in, creating a vacuum leak which makes for a high idle. Stop with the fuel cleaner! If the problem is this bad you need to see a technician capable of diagnosing it.
