Questions and Answers

Chevy Suburban Speedometer Inop

Q. I have a:

  • 1999 Chevy Suburban
  • 5.7 liter
  • 87,000 miles
  • Automatic transmission
  • Fuel injection
  • A/C and Cruise control
Chevy Suburban Speedometer Inop

I have several problems with it, first of all the odometer stopped working about a month ago, second of all the gas gauge doesn't work. So I have to calculate the gallons of gas I fill up with and guesstimate how many miles I will be able to run on that gas. For the odometer I have to use the rpm's to know how not to go over the speed limit and the school zone limit.

I have had several problems which were taken care of with the original warranty and then with the extended warranty, but both of those are out now. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Maria G.

A. You said odometer. Do you mean speedometer? Or maybe both the speedometer and odometer are not working? Either way it sounds like a possible speed sensor problem or dash cluster problem. If it's the dash cluster you will need to get an exchange unit from a dealer or they may need to send yours out to be fixed.

As for the fuel gauge, there have been problems with the sending units in the tank but some tests will need to be performed to make sure it's the tank unit and not the gauge in dash.
