Chevy S-10 Leaking Antifreeze

Q. Hi Vince, I've got a 1997 Chevy S-10, 4.2 liter V-6, manual transmission with AC, and it's leaking coolant badly from the water pump seal. What are the chances that the water pump is still good, even though the gasket has failed?

Chevy S-10 Leaking Antifreeze

A. The water pump seal that I'm thinking of is behind where the fan and pulley bolt on. If the coolant is coming from a little weep hole in the pump body, replace the pump. If you are talking about the gaskets that seal it to the block, if it's leaking there, I'd be wondering why. The bolts could have come loose but you may be having a problem with electrolisis. Meaning you need to check all the engine grounds to prevent voltage from flowing into the coolant.
