Oldsmobile Intrigue Serpentine Belt

Q. I bought a new serpentine belt hoping to silence the squeal coming from under the hood. My question is how do I remove the old one and install the new one? The gentleman at the auto part store told me that one of the pulleys actually tilts outward making the process easier. He said I shouldn?t have to loosen any bolts to remove the belt. Is this true? And if so, which pulley and how exactly does it work?

A. There is usually a square hole in a lever that a pulley is mounted to. You install a special tool or a ratchet into this hole and pry the pulley in whatever direction it wants to move. There is spring tension on this pulley to keep belt tight automatically, tensioner. You will need to make a mental note of which way the belt is routed unless the sticker is still under the hood to help in putting the belt back on the correct pulleys in the same fashion the it was originally. NOTE: Some belts can be routed wrong and make the water pump turn in the wrong direction which would be bad!

Rotate the drive belt tensioner using a 15-mm box end wrench on the pulley nut.
