Pathfinder Dash Lights

Q. I have a 1989 Nissan Pathfinder SE, 6 cylinder engine that I replaced about a year ago, automatic transmission, fuel injection (I think) 180,000 on the car, approx. 30,000 on the engine A/C, C/C, the works.

My question is a bit elementary, and I apologize for bothering you, but I have lost my Manual and cant find the information I need on line.

A couple of days ago both my battery light and a light that says A/T oil temp came on. (at the same time) They are both very faint, but defiantly on. They become brighter and flash when my turn signals are on. When I am at a light or idling, I can feel surges through the vehicle.

I just had my oil and fluids changed three weeks ago. I know there are some problems with my battery and my car has a history of strange shorts in the electrical system. The alternator was replaced about 2 years ago.

So far I've had no problems, but I'm making a 1,000 mile trip in a couple of weeks and don't want to wind up on the side of the road. I tend to distrust auto shop that take one look at me (a girl) and then over charge me. Any insight on the light would be helpful.

Thank you,
Rhiannon

A. You know, every time I hear a Lady say something like that, I hang my head in shame for all the unscrupulous shops that take advantage of every woman that comes in. That is always something that bugged me.

The problem is in the alternator. There is a diode in it that controls the dash warning lights. The alternator may be charging, just the warning lights are on. Since you say you are having battery problems as well, there may be a short inside the battery. I would replace the battery and take the car in for a charging system test, just to make sure it is charging.

If it is, you can take you trip with relative peace of mind. I say relative peace of mind because if a problem does arise, you won't know it because the light is already on. If your trip takes you to SE Minnesota, I can check it out for you.
