Broken Camshaft

Q. I have a Pontiac Lemans 1988, 1.6 liter engine, manual transmission. It has 120,000 miles and the camshaft has broken. I was wondering if it was worth replacing the camshaft? I took the camshaft off, it's an overhead cam, and the tappets underneath looked fine, but would everything else also be fine?

A. If the engine was running well, and you had no problems with the car, and the break was fairly clean without a lot of broken pieces, then I would say it's worth replacing the camshaft.

Of course there could always be hidden damage. But if it was a clean break, then you won't have to worry about pieces of metal running through the engine. I would price out a new set of tappets and consider replacing them as well. They're old and as long as the camshaft is out, you might as well.
