Don't Stand Idle On Gas Mileage

Wednesday April 25, 2007
I almost never use drive-thru windows. It's not because I'm ecologically green or anything other socially responsible reason. I just usually don't feel like sitting there. The other day it was raining hard, and my wife suggested the drive-thru at Dunkin Donuts. We sat in our car, in line for 10 minutes, so my wife got to hear 10 minutes of griping from me about how much I hate sitting in the drive-thru line.

I may find them annoying, but there are some good reasons not to use the drive-thru. The most obvious are the carbon emissions your car spits out while you sit there, but there's another reason that hits closer to your wallet -- gas mileage. Every minute you sit with your engine idling means fewer miles per gallon. It may not seem like much, but it adds up. The myth that your car uses more gas to start itself up than idling for 10 minutes died a long time ago. In fact, after only 10 seconds of idling, most cars have used more gas than on start-up. Research done by the Canadian government shows that it's even worth turning your engine off at stop lights!

Gas mileage should be on all of our minds, and we should be doing everything we can to maximize our gas mileage. Besides, you can justify those donuts with your long walk across the parking lot.

What part of shut your car off and restart don’t you understand. You are not going to live forever so take life as it comes at you and don’t make problems that are not there, (eg. gripping at your wife.) that will cause more problems than sitting in line. I don’t know if this is what you mean by “comments” but the delete button is only a stones throw away. as you can see I am not practicing what I preach. Have a good life, Thank you.

I agree, I can not stand waiting in a drive thru window. Try and tell your partner about it and it’s a argument waiting for rebutal. Explain how gas mileage on the new car is going down because of it. I don’t like to argue, but the point is, drive thru are not drive thru’s anymore. You order your meals for your family and your sisters now.

I hate drive thru’s because they always get the order wrong and it’s faster to go inside.
