Are Green Oil Changes in Your Future?
It's all green these days, or at least according to marketing experts. If you can work the term "green" into your product strategy you're almost guaranteed some green stuff of a more spendy sort. Auto repair has been slow to jump on the green bandwagon, probably because it's just a really tough fit. There's very little green about cars in general, and even less when it comes to fixing them. Slowly but surely, the industry seems to be adopting some greener practices. Oil changes are the new hot green thing. It's always been a more green choice to use synthetic oil in your engine, but who knows what goes into the production of the stuff? It could be scary. If you want a greener oil change, find a shop that offers recycled, or re-refined, engine oil. Eco Ultra -- a popular brand of re-refined oil -- claims that one barrel of recycled engine oil makes as much usable motor oil as 50 barrels of crude. Wow. That's saving a lot of oil, even at a single oil change!

At our shop we pratice “green” service as much as possible, all used parts “except cores for remanufacturing” are recycled as scrap metal, used antifreeze from engine cooling systems is re-used in loaded tractor tires, used oil is collected for refining, even past board boxes that parts arrive in are sent for reycling. GREEN should be everyones practice, together we can make a difference.
I believe it is great that we can reuse that oil and save 50 barrels of crude oil when we do it. But my question is, is the oil that is being reused just as protective as the oil I buy from the shop and put in my engine. I mean I care about the environment and all but I also care for my car, she was not cheap and I would like to keep her in perfect condition.
found a really cool iphone app for oil changes
I believe the use of extended drain intervals combined with high quality synthetic engine oil can save thousands of gallons of oil a year. Every vehicle that prescribes to this method would save a minimum of 14 quarts of oil per year! Not to mention fuel mileage savings as an added benefit.
Our shop also burns the waste oil from our oil changes for heat during the winter saving thousands of gallons of oil a year and reducing our dependency on natural gas or coal.
I am a firm believer that going green does not have to cost more green or take more time to accomplish.
