DIYers Have a New Work Space in Milwaukee

By May 11, 2010

They may not be the first to try this, but the guys who opened up Milwaukee's most comprehensive do-it-yourself garage space seemed determined to make it the best. Hands On Garage is a huge 10-bay repair center that will rent you a work space complete with tools and a lift. Could be pretty cool, no? In addition, they operate a full parts and supplies store on site to ensure you have all of the basics you need for your repairs and maintenance. It's large and clean, two big pluses when you're talking about repair space. The ASE certified experts they keep on staff can help you out if you get in a pinch, for a reasonable fee. In fact, all of the fees seem to be reasonable. Work space rental starts at 35 cents per minute (or $21 an hour). They state the rates by minute because that's how they charge you. In theory you could run in and do a 30-minute oil change, complete with a lift to make things easy, for ten bucks plus the cost of supplies. Not bad, eh?

To be fair, I've contacted them to get some more details. I'm interested in things like recycling of used fluids and oil, any membership fees and other liabilities they have probably already addressed. More to come!

I love the concept. The price is only good if the tools are complete of decent quality and well organized so you don’t have to waste time looking for things or waiting for someone else to finish using it.

Other wise it could be a bit pricey.

I hope they don’t charge you extra to dispose of used fluids.

very neat idea…..I wish there was something like that around here.

The closest we got, are some “friendly” neighborhood mechanic shops that will let you actually watch, and do a little hands on….they don’t just “shoe you off” to a waiting area when you pull your car in, for example.

While traveling upnorth, I caught a glimpse of a billboard advertise about renting space for auto repairs. At the time, I did not catch the name of the place or the full advertisment but using the internet for the Milwaukee area, I have come across your site.
You mention this DIY in the Milwaukee area. Where is it located? Is there a phone number available for renting this space?

Fantastic. Back in the 70s there was a similar space in Boston, $2 an hour. Fascinating mix of customers. Never understood why the concept died out. Insurance?
