Prius Repair Manuals Are Here!
Tuesday September 16, 2008
It's about time! Since the release of the little electric engine that could, the Toyota Prius of course, do-it-yourselfers were in a pinch. They wanted to save the money and have the satisfaction of doing some of their own repairs and maintenance, but the resources were hard to come by. Factory manuals could be had, but the price was a bummer. At long last, the makers of inexpensive repair manuals have come to the table with a consumer-friendly Prius repair manual that covers everything from the rooter to the tooter (that means front to back if you're from Georgia). Haynes took long enough to get it out there, but it's ready for you to pick up and get busy. If I'm not mistaken, the Chilton's version of the Prius repair manual had just been released as well. Take your pick.

Alldata is a great piece of software -for Prius, and almost any other vehicle. That is what we use at our shop. It covers everything from 1982 on up. They send us software updates four times per year. We highly recommend it.
Wanted to tell you and your readers about my brake problem and save some one else the same.Had a brake job done all 4 wheels pads/shoes.After driving it next day or two had real bad lockup on back left.Took it back they adjusted and it was the same lock up next day.Called them they claimed it was ABS problem and they don’t work on that.I took back wheels off and found they had mix up on star adjusters, wrong sides so every time I braked it was running out the shoes to lock up them, swaped them and fixed problem.Ever hear of that?
Do you have a repair manual for honda Insight? Thanks!
It almost seems, though, that the people who are doing work by themselves probably aren’t going in too deep to the Prius controls, so most will only be using the manual for brakes, suspension, etc, rather than the Hybrid Synergy Drive system. There are “cheat codes” to the system that allow for the deactivation of things like that annoying beeping in reverse, though I doubt that the manual will include those.
Rod, if you are savvy enough to take rear brakes apart and figure out the shop had mixed up the adjuster star wheels for the brake shoes, for the life of me I can’t figure out why you didn’t just do the work yourself in the first place. You obviously know more than the shop that did the job. Brakes can save your life, don’t go back there!
I’ve done virtually ALL my own work for 40 years and I joke with friends that I never get cheated and never have arguments with my repair shop
Being able to work on a Prius is great as long as owners remember that it contains a source of live voltage that can easily kill a person even when the ignition is off. This is not 12 volts that you can disconnect by removing a battery cable. There’s enough power stored in the battery pack to arc explosively. Do not attempt to repair your Prius until you are extremely familiar with the service manual. Use only the tools specified and follow all safety procedures.
I personally can not stand this tinker toy of a car, but it does seem to be a hot ticket. I have a tech that specializes in the Prius and he is staying extremely busy. Thank god for alldata as mitchell seems to be lacking in information on this vehicle.
Oh by the way, nice jab at us Georgia boys, you must be a yankee.
